Using Haiku Poetry and Healthy Choices to Counter ObesityDr. Imani Ma'at is an Author, Motivational Speaker, Award-Winning Health Educator, and Radio Talk Show Host with 22 years of experience at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) as Health Scientist & Program Director. She created Healthy Haiku Workshops based on her scientifically evaluated and award-winning curriculum that infuses the arts in health education. Her workshops also grew out of her Teen Theater Group (YES 4 Health, Inc.) and through working with mentors, youth and women's organizations over the last 11 years. During workshops, participants learn about nutrition and other health issues and most importantly how to create powerful lives and environments.

During the course of her many years in Atlanta, she often shopped at Sevananda and grew to love the iconic Co-Op, of course becoming a member owner. In March of 2010 she was hired as a cashier and went on to work the Customer Service Desk. When a position in the Marketing Department became available, she applied and the rest is history. Sistar Ifini is now an Assistant in Sevananda’s Marketing Department and among her varied duties, she coordinates Outreach, Store Demos, the Be The Change Program and the Artist Alliance Program. |

Dr. Ruby Thomas is a board certified pediatrician with specialized training in preventive and integrative medicine. She completed her medical training and received her Master of Public Health degree from Morehouse School of Medicine in Atlanta, Georgia. She has special interest in preventing childhood obesity and its consequences. She has conducted research in how pediatricians manage obesity in black women and girls, and has a specialized interest in how plant-based (or vegan/vegetarian diets) can optimize health in children. She is a recurring guest on The Wellness Blueprint on the Survival Radio Network, covering topics including breastfeeding, childhood obesity, and plant-based diets in children. |
Whoever Controls Your Food Controls You! Tenisio Seanima is currently the Farmer Services Coordinator with Georgia Organics and the General Manager of Nature’s Candy Farms. His familiar roots in farming go as far back as 1882 to his family’s farm, The August Long Estate, and he began “urban farming” in 2011 after receiving a business degree in Green and Sustainable Enterprise Management. Mr. Seanima’s experiences involved building and managing community garden projects for Columbia Residential. Later, he had the honor of formalizing the sales department for one of the south east’s most impressive and innovative urban farms, Truly Living Well Center for Natural Urban Agriculture. Now in his current role at Georgia Organics, Tenisio provides support for both new and experienced farmers in implementing business systems, enhancing farmer prosperity, increasing the number of new farmers in Georgia as well as increasing the certified organic acreage that exists in Georgia.
